February 2008
We are ready to embark on the promises
and hope of year 2008. Thanks to all members and supporters of the Fairmont
Heights High School Alumni Association for your dedication and service in
helping to meet the needs of students and faculty of Fairmont Heights High
School during the year 2007.
We were faced with many challenges and
obstacles, including the future of Fairmont Heights High School. Because the
school did not meet the physical requirements for a high school according to
Prince George's County Public Schools, a feasibility study was done. In
February, after protests and a public hearing, options were presented:
- To build a replacement on the existing
site
- To modernize and upgrade
- To renovate and add minimal upgrades
and repairs
- Leave the school as is with Capital
Investment of the building and
infrastructure
The final decision was to build a
new high school on a new site. the site has been selected and plans for
constructing the new Fairmont Heights High School proposed facility are
underway. At the request of the FHHS Alumni Association, an update of the
proposed development of the new school and the use on the existing facility will
be presented at a Parent-Community Meeting on February 20, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in
the school gymnasium.
In November 2007, FHHS underwent
evaluation by the Middle State Commission. Every ten years, high school are
evaluated for their accreditation. Even though the inspection of the school has
been completed with a brief oral report to the staff, the school will not
receive a full report until next year. There is no doubt in the mind of the
Principal, Mrs. Nicholson, that the school passed.
On December 01, 2007, the legendary Mr.
G. James Gholson was honored at a Special Memorial Service at the New Mt. Nebo
Baptist Church, Capitol Heights, where Rev. Robert R. Johnson, Senior Pastor
delivered the message. The participation of the G. James Gholson Middle School
Choir and the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Youth Choir, along with memorable tributes
to Mr. Gholson, made the program a success. Refreshments, provided by Mr. Jerome
Navies of McDonald's, culminated the program. The next memorial program is
scheduled for December 06, 2008 at the same location. Further details will be
forthcoming.
